Abstract

This study analyzes the short story “Robohnya Surau Kami” (The Collapse of Our Mosque) by A. A. Navis through Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction approach. The research aims to dismantle the dominant meanings constructed in the text, especially those related to the binary opposition between ritual religiosity and social responsibility. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the study applies a textual deconstruction process that includes identifying binary oppositions, reversing their hierarchy, and revealing contradictions and ironies embedded in the narrative. The findings show that Navis’s story reverses the hierarchy of values in which pious worship, often seen as the highest form of morality, becomes a symbol of spiritual egoism and social neglect. This reversal produces new meanings of religiosity as a moral awareness that must be continuously negotiated in social life. Thus, “Robohnya Surau Kami” not only criticizes formalistic piety but also opens a plural and dynamic space of interpretation that challenges absolute moral assumptions in modern society.
