Abstract

This article explores the rhetorical beauty of the Qur’ān through a balāghah analysis of selected persuasive verses, focusing particularly on the science of badīʿ and its role in enhancing the appeal and effectiveness of Qur’ānic discourse. Balāghah, the art of eloquence in Arabic, comprises three branches, one of which is badīʿ, dedicated to embellishing both the meaning (muhassināt maʿnawiyyah) and the expression (muhassināt lafẓiyyah) of language. This study concentrates on two key muhassināt maʿnawiyyah techniques: thibāq (antithesis) and muqābalah (juxtaposition), both of which contribute significantly to the aesthetic and persuasive qualities of the Qur’ān. Unlike earlier studies that primarily focused on thibāq alone, this research adopts a broader analytical lens by incorporating muqābalah, highlighting how the pairing of opposite meanings serves to reinforce spiritual and moral messages. Verses are examined to demonstrate how contrasts—such as truth versus falsehood or light versus darkness—intensify the intended meanings and deepen the rhetorical impact. The findings reveal that these techniques not only enhance the beauty of the text but also contribute to a more profound understanding of its divine message. The study thus expands the existing discourse in Qur’ānic rhetoric by offering a more comprehensive perspective on the interplay between linguistic artistry and spiritual content. In doing so, it enriches the appreciation of the Qur’ān’s eloquence and provides deeper insights into its persuasive power and thematic depth.
